Magical Ability: Regina is quite adept at the magical arts, and has learned all she knows so far from her mothers book and Rumpelstiltskin, though at a push she would admit there is always more to learn. STORYBROOKE CHARACTER:
Once the curse was completed Regina's life was the image of perfection. Regina was positioned as the mayor and in contrast to her castle chose a grand white house. For a few days the knowledge that she had finally won filled her with a real sense of joy and triumph. She watched them scurry about their pathetic lives, bowing and scraping to her just as much as they had before and ache a sense of missing something but never fully able to grasp exactly what. With this to keep her going Regina focused her life in on what she needed to learn to survive in this new world. She drew her minions back to her side, luring them in with promises of delights in return for teaching her things like politics and accounting. The spell had given her a general overview of the world but with two lives warring in her head it was often difficult to grasp which bit of information was correct to which life, but soon the tasks were accomplished and the lessons learned. Regina settled into the new life she had created and found that perhaps living the same day over and over again was not as enjoyable as she had previously believed. Erasing the memories of all around her had caused a strange repercussion. The dull ever present ache that everyone around her felt never changed, either for the better or the worse, and with no one aware of what they were missing shoving people in the direction of the one they craved caused no real impact. In many ways it was like they were falling in love all over again. Regina found all of it disgusting. Soon the tedium grew too much for her and she found herself seeking the aid of Archie hopper. His advice was simple, she had a void and she needed to fill it, but how could she fill it if everyone around her was an air headed twit?
It was then an angel in the shape of a young boy entered her life. At first it was the shock of outsiders being able to enter her town that drew her to them, the thrill of someone not under her control struggling and fighting against her, then it was the warmth of affection. Regina hadn't felt affection for anyone in a long time and had no one had felt affection for her since the death of her father. Owen offered all of that, and he showed it in the most simplistic of ways. A small key-ring as an apology was so innocent and childlike, but so wonderfully precious that even Regina could not help but want for more. Deciding to keep Owen for herself, her attempts to sway his father only clarified to her that more severe action must be taken. Ordering the father captured had been a serious mistake on Regina's part as it had only served to drive the boy further away from her. Offering him a choice had been no better Owen had run from her in fear of the monster he thought her to be and she had proven to be by refusing to free his father. At least in hindsight it had clarified a few things for her. In her anger she had killed the father Kurt and buried him at their campsite, but she now knew that the void could be filled. Going to Archie Hopper had only once again proven what she already knew she had a void and a child eased the pain this void caused. Getting a child was the difficult part, she couldn't truly leave Storybrooke and even if she could she wasn't sure that her papers would hold up outside of the magical town. Not to mention she had no idea where to look, Gold had been her only option, where he had gotten the child and who it was did not really matter to her. The only thing that mattered was that when she saw Henry her whole world had shrunk to this tiny bundle but had expanded in hope at the same time. He was perfect, and would be even more so if he would just stop crying for a few seconds. She blamed this strange quirk on the mother. A closed adoption? The woman obviously had something to hide. No amount of hospital visits could cure the incessant crying. He only stopped when he tired himself out or needed to eat and then it was only enough to sleep or eat before he started again. Regina began to pray that he would always need sleep or food. When Mary bloody perfect Margret held him and he stopped crying at once, Regina realized exactly what was going on. The baby simply hated her. Barely a month old and already he was another addition to that long list. When Henry finally gave her a chance and stopped crying as she debated whether to give him back to the adoption service Regina's heart filled with joy. She had failed everyone who had depended on her before but for her precious Henry she would truly try.
Raising a son was filled with endless joys and sorrows, more so then Regina could ever have guessed. Henry and her grew close over the first few years she had him, she was careful to take time from work to be with him and rarely left him alone, afraid that if she let him out of her sight she would lose him. When he reached a school going age was where the problems really started. It allowed her the chance to get back to her work and despite the difficulties it was work that Regina truly enjoyed. She spent more and more time in the office and noticed a change in her son and his reactions to her but brushed it off as the children in school telling him things about her. You didn't get to be popular while being the disciplinarian after all. The problems grew worse and worse despite her best efforts and confessing to him that he was adopted in fear of him finding out from someone else certainly didn't help. He grew difficult to raise, shouting about how she was cruel and heartless and often commenting that she wasn't even his real mother. Regina did everything she could but her natural reaction in the face of adversity was to affect a cool mask and doing that only further alienated her from the boy she loved more than anything. After he was given a fairy-tale book but bloody Mary-Margret (Even in this life she was still a little life-destroyer.) Henry began to call her "The Evil Queen" and correctly identified everyone in the town as their fairy-tale counterparts. Regina panicked, sending him to Doctor Hopper a man convinced of his reality and trained in the mind seemed like a perfect idea. She spun him a tale about being concerned for Henry's welfare and at home carefully dropped in words like crazy in the hopes of swaying Henry from the truth.
Of course like everything in Regina's life it was no use. A few months later he disappeared without a sound one day and Regina waited and waited at home. Resisting the urge to go searching herself because the Sheriff advised against it, and then he turns up with this blonde haired twit who is causing Regina's mind to scream warning bells who casually admits she's the birth mother. In that one moment all of Regina's fears come to the forefront of her mind. She was losing him again, once again her happy ending was being ripped from her and there was nothing she could do to stop it. Regina tried everything in her power to get rid of this birth mother but all her best efforts only made the brat try harder. It seemed like everywhere Regina looked she was losing out; on her son, with Graham (His punishment had fit his betrayal), her town, her apple tree and above all the fear she had worked so hard to retain. When she finally lost her temper enough to enlist the help of Jefferson to get one of her most successful spells that stupid twit messed it up and she was forced to watch in agony. Watch as her son slipped into a coma that no medicine could heal him from, as he was saved by someone other than her and as the curse she had given up everything was broken. Regina spent the hours after the breaking of the curse hiding in her house for fear of what the people would do to her, but now magic is back.......and everything is different.
STORY BOOK CHARACTER:
To say evil is not born it is made was a little too fitting in Regina's case. She was born to Princess Cora and Prince Henry and lived a rather joyful childhood under the strict control of her mother. Her mother had dreams of being Queen and when her own were crushed she naturally pushed these dreams onto her daughter. Regina was perfectly trained in all manner of being a lady and learned to fear her mother's magic as much as she craved her mother's approval. Her father became her only source of comfort and safety, at least until she met Daniel. Daniel was in a word....perfect. Understanding and kind, Regina and he connected instantly and despite the difference in their status fell in love. The two kept their relationship a secret for fear of Cora, but made promises to love the other eternally. This meeting occurred in Regina's late teens and it was while out with Daniel that Regina first met Snow White. Snow was a small slip of a girl who came careening through the woods on her horse. Naturally Regina jumped up on her own horse, Rocinante, making chase and saving the young girls life without really thinking too much of it.
Snow’s father, King Leopold, was so impressed with her actions that he proposed to Regina there and then. Too much in shock to respond, Cora accepted for her leading Regina to escape to Daniel and beg him to take her away. Snow had followed her future step-mother and overheard the two, so Regina begged her to stay quiet. Unfortunately Snow was tricked into revealing the secret by Cora. When she and Daniel were set to leave Cora intervened and crushed Daniels heart in front of Regina’s eyes to forcing her to stay. When she learned of Snow’s failure, Regina was so furious that she swore revenge on the little brat. She continued the marriage preparations but dreamed of escaping the loveless marriage she was being forced into. After an escape attempt, which was foiled by her mother, Regina first met her future magic teacher Rumpelstiltskin. Regina stole her mother’s magic book and summoned him in desperation to be rid of her mother. Rumple presented her with a magic mirror that she could use to escape her mother. Regina originally refused to use the mirror fearing that the magic it would require will turn her as evil as her mother. Backed into a corner when Cora declared that they will kill Leopold after their marriage and steal his throne Regina finally summoned the strength to push Cora through the mirror to Wonderland. Regina enjoyed using magic too much to resist any more and agreed to further tutelage by Rumple.
Despite being married to King Leopold, Regina remained deeply in love with Daniel and preserved his body using her newly acquired magic. She grew further resentful of Snow White as Leopold displayed preference to Snow, only allowing Regina a single apple tree in the castle garden. Despite her teacher’s best efforts, Regina took many years to grasp magic and was by no means a natural born talent, despite her impressive skills in later years. Upon finding tales of Maleficent in her mother’s books, Regina seeks out Maleficent hoping to learn more complicated spells from her, especially the Dragon Fire she is infamous for. However she finds Maleficent in a dilapidated state, unable to use her fire and after Regina willingly throws herself in harm’s way to force Maleficent’s fire Maleficent is successful in returning to her previous strength, (Later cursing Aurora with the Sleeping Curse while Regina watches) the two become close friends. Regina could not initially rip out a stallion’s heart as it brought back too many painful memories. It was not until the failed resurrection of Daniel by Doctor Frankenstein that she was able to reach the levels of anger necessary to carry out these acts. This anger continues through Regina’s life and though she is offered a second chance at happiness by Tinkerbelle she fails to take it unable to let go of the anger that fills her heart for the fear of how she would function without it.
When Regina was introduced to the Genie by her husband, Regina noted his attraction to her. She instantly manipulated him by revealing the lack of love in her marriage through tearful words and then pretended that she wished to commit suicide in an effort to escape it. When the Genie offered to kill Leopold, Regina quickly agreed and eventually revealed her true intentions to him once he had finished the deed. In a final act of desperation the Genie wished to look upon her always and became trapped in her Mirror, much to Regina’s delight. After Leopold’s death Regina hired a Huntsman in order to kill Snow White and commanded him to bring back Snow White’s heart. Upon his return she was disgusted to find that he had not carved out Snow White’s heart instead presenting her with the heart of a deer. In return she ripped out his own heart and forced him to become her slave and share her bed for the rest of his life. Regina is later made barren by her own hand in response to her mother’s manipulations.
Regina and Snow White share a brief moment where reconciliation was possible after Rumple alters Regina’s appearance to allow her to walk among her people. When she is falsely accused of treason and rescued by Snow the two share a heart to heart and Regina begins to wish that they could put their past behind them and be a family. However Snow soon discovers the village Regina had previously ordered killed for failing to tell her Snow’s whereabouts and Snow attempts to shoot her in anger. Regina returned to her castle and accepted her people’s name of “The Evil Queen” with grim determination. Regina met Belle for the first time on the road from Rumples castle. She manipulated Belle into kissing Rumple to take away his powers and yet was frustrated when her plan backfired and Belle was thrown out of the castle. Never to interfere with Rumple again. Regina captured Belle in anger and locked her away in the tower without Rumple’s knowledge. Later visiting Rumpelstiltskin and mocking him over Belle’s supposed death.
Regina traded Maleficent the Dark Curse for the Sleeping Curse and then captured a woodcutter in the forest. Unable to enter the house of the blind witch in order to collect the apple she required for the spell she used his two children and promised to bring then to their father in return for the apple. The two children succeed but Regina trapped them in the forest (After they refuse to live with her.) and casts the sleeping curse on the apple ready for Snow White. Regina gained “Prince Charming” from his adoptive father (Who had decided to kill him.) and used him as bait to lure Snow to the place where it all began. When Snow appeared before her she offered Snow the apple informing her that she had a choice to eat the apple or watch as everyone she cared about dies. Snow accepts and Regina rejoiced as Snow fell under the Sleeping curse and abandoned her in the field. Regina trapped Charming in a forest so he could never reach Snow and was infuriated when she received the message through her Mirror that Snow had been awoken. She also learned that Snow White intended to take back her Kingdom and appeared before her. Regina informed Snow that she could choose her kingdom or her people and gave her one day to make up her mind. When Snow refused to renounce her claim to the throne Regina attempted to kill Grumpy but was cut by Snow White and retreated in shock.
Regina joined sides with King George but as they began to lose she was tricked by Snow and captured. The two initially intended to kill Regina but Snow eventually had a change of heart and offered Regina a second chance. When Regina attempted to kill her in spite of this Snow enacted a spell that prevented Regina from hurting her directly and Regina decided to take more drastic measures in order to kill her rival. She barged through the door of Snow White’s wedding celebrations and offered her only her wedding day in safety, before traveling to Maleficent and stealing the dark curse from her after a fight. Regina failed in her first attempt at casting the curse because she used the heart of her prized stallion. After visiting Rumple Regina realised her folly and struggled with herself over the desire to cast the curse or leave her father alive. She confided her fears in her father and despite his pleas made the choice to put her own happiness over his life. She ripped out his heart and sacrificed it in the second attempt successfully enacting the Dark Curse. Regina raced ahead of the curse in her carriage wanting to see the face of her enemies suffering as the curse claimed them with her own eyes. However Charming had already freed Emma from the curse by transporting her through the wardrobe by the time Regina arrives, and Regina can only content herself with the knowledge that neither Snow or Charming can escape.
